Sam Neill recently provided an update on his health as he continues to battle stage-three blood cancer. Earlier this year, the acclaimed actor disclosed his diagnosis in his memoir, “Did I Ever Tell You This?” In the book, he detailed his initial chemotherapy treatment, which proved ineffective, leading him to pursue an experimental anti-cancer drug for his angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
In a recent interview, the 76-year-old Neill mentioned that he has increased the frequency of his medication, a treatment he described as “grim and depressing,” from once a month to every two weeks. Despite the challenging nature of the therapy, he noted that he has been in remission for the past year. However, Neill acknowledges that medical professionals have cautioned him that the treatment’s effectiveness will eventually wane.
“I’m prepared for that,” he stated, expressing his lack of fear towards death.
The diagnosis came to light in early 2022 when Neill discovered lumps in his neck. Reflecting on this life-altering experience, he shared, “I started to look at my life and realize how immensely grateful I am for so much of it.” His newfound perspective prompted him to document his life experiences, as he realized the uncertainty surrounding his prognosis.
While Neill expressed a desire for more time, especially to witness the growth of his beloved terraces, olive trees, cypresses, and his cherished grandchildren, he remains unperturbed by the idea of dying. In an earlier interview with The Independent, he dismissed the notion of retirement, emphasizing his love for acting and his enthusiasm for the creative stimulation it provides. Retirement, he confessed, is a prospect he finds unbearable, as it would mean relinquishing the world of acting that he holds dear.
