Tesla made headlines on September 1st as it revealed an upgraded version of its Model 3, proudly manufactured in China, boasting an extended driving range. Notably, this marks the first instance where the electric vehicle giant has chosen to launch a new model in China before its home turf in the United States.

Produced at Tesla’s state-of-the-art Shanghai plant, the revamped Model 3 comes with a slightly higher initial price tag, around 12% more than its predecessor’s base model in China. Notably, this enhanced Model 3 is not just catering to the local Chinese market; it’s set to make its way to a range of markets across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

In parallel with this release, Tesla strategically reduced the prices of its premium offerings—the Model S and Model X—by approximately 14% to 21% in both China and the United States, two of its most significant markets.

The decision to elevate the base price of the Model 3, Tesla’s second-best-selling model after the Model Y, may well be a strategic move aimed at safeguarding profit margins. Nevertheless, it’s worth highlighting that the price reductions for the high-end models echo the competitive dynamics within the electric vehicle (EV) industry, particularly in China, where Tesla previously ignited a price war with local rivals, including industry leader BYD.

Tesla

The updated Model 3 signifies Tesla’s inaugural modification to its mass-market vehicle portfolio since the introduction of the Model Y in 2020. It’s important to note that Tesla hasn’t yet disclosed a release date for the new Model 3 in the U.S., where it presently offers substantial discounts on select inventory vehicles. Furthermore, the Model 3 continues to be assembled in Fremont, California.

China has the distinction of hosting the global debut of the latest Model 3. Some of the new features, such as a rear display tailored for back-seat passengers, seem specifically designed to cater to the preferences of Chinese car buyers. Tesla has also made improvements to the acoustic system, elevated interior comfort, and introduced additional airbags. Cosmetic changes to the sedan’s exterior provide a sleeker front profile and updated headlights.

Additionally, the enhanced Model 3 promises an extended driving range. According to China’s testing standards, the standard version can now cover a distance of up to 606 km (377 miles), marking a 9% improvement compared to the base model it replaces in China.

Tesla has already initiated the process of accepting orders and anticipates starting deliveries in China during the fourth quarter. The company is also actively receiving orders from other international markets where it exports vehicles manufactured in Shanghai, including Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand.

While the updated Model 3 is expected to perform strongly outside of China, where EV competition is less intense, it faces formidable rivals within the Chinese market. Numerous new models with comparable or even superior features and lower price points have entered the scene since the Shanghai Auto Show in April.

This refresh, known internally as the “Highland” project, aimed to streamline production costs and enhance the Model 3’s overall appeal. Although Tesla hasn’t disclosed specific details about the new Model 3’s battery, industry insiders suggest it utilizes the same lithium-iron-phosphate battery from CATL for the base model. Achieving the extended range involves reducing weight and optimizing the car’s aerodynamics to minimize wind resistance.

Tesla

Within China, the Model 3 faces competition from vehicles like BYD’s Seal, Geely’s Zeekr 001, Nio’s ET5, and Xpeng’s P7i. Xpeng, for instance, recently announced attractive incentives, including zero-interest loans and free upgrades for its EV.

Tesla plans to present the enhanced Model 3 at the Munich auto show, potentially eclipsing the spotlight of German automakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes, who are also venturing into the EV market in response to the rapidly evolving dynamics in China.

The new Model 3 is priced starting at 259,900 yuan ($35,807) in China and 42,990 euros ($46,670) in Germany, with European deliveries set to kick off in late October.

In Short

Tesla’s introduction of the upgraded Model 3 with an extended driving range, initially in China, signifies a strategic move in the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles. While it is a testament to Tesla’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, it also highlights the fierce competition and price dynamics within the EV market, particularly in China.

This unveiling not only showcases Tesla’s adaptability to cater to diverse markets but also underscores the global significance of the Chinese automotive landscape. As Tesla continues to lead the way in electric mobility, the enhanced Model 3 promises to make a lasting impact on environmentally conscious consumers worldwide.

With its sleek design, improved features, and extended range, the Model 3 exemplifies the future of sustainable transportation. As Tesla expands its footprint, the automotive industry’s landscape continues to evolve, offering consumers an array of eco-friendly choices.
