One of the nation’s major cable providers, Charter Spectrum, no longer offers Disney programming as Disney pulled its content from their platform. This move occurred even as Disney-owned ESPN networks were broadcasting live sporting events like the US Open and college football.

Charter Communications cited a broken “video ecosystem” and stated that Disney had insisted on a traditional long-term deal with higher rates and limited packaging flexibility. Disney declined Charter’s proposal, leading to the removal of its video channels from Charter’s services on August 31.

This dispute left fans without access to sports events such as the football game between the University of Florida and the University of Utah and the match between No. 1 men’s tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and Lloyd Harris during the US Open, which were originally aired on ESPN.

 Spectrum

US Open Tennis expressed disappointment over the situation and hoped for a swift resolution between Spectrum, Charter, and Disney.

Disagreements over carriage fees are not uncommon in the cable industry, particularly as cord-cutting and streaming services have disrupted traditional cable business models. Disney had previously faced similar conflicts, including one with streaming service YouTube TV in 2021.
