Although Barkley had managed to avoid missing any games due to injury in the previous season, he was keen on accelerating his recovery this time around. However, he also recognized the importance of being attentive to his body’s signals.
As a Pro Bowl running back with his free agency approaching at the end of the season, there had been speculation about whether Barkley might exercise caution due to his contract situation. Nevertheless, Barkley, who had signed a revised franchise tag at the commencement of training camp, emphasized that his primary focus remained his physical readiness.
He stated, “The reality of it is that, if I can go, if my body is telling me to go out there and play, then, yeah, that is what I’d like to do. Anyone else who is in this situation, or say if some people were in this situation where they don’t have a contract behind them or for business reasons, I respect that, too. Probably is a smart thing to do, to be honest.
“But that is not really in my makeup and how I view it. I don’t judge anybody if they do that, but for me, if my body is able to go, that’s when I’ll go.”
In addition to Barkley’s absence, left tackle Andrew Thomas was also among the inactive players for the Giants in the Monday night game, with second-year lineman Josh Ezeudu stepping in to take his place in the lineup.
