Renowned Grammy-winning artist Maren Morris recently unveiled two fresh tracks, “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here,” alongside her candid thoughts on her decision to distance herself from the country music scene and her reflections on the widening sociopolitical gap in recent years.

Morris expressed, “These two songs play a pivotal role in my journey forward, capturing the profound anger and liberating emotions I’ve experienced over the past few years. They also signify my path towards an uncertain future, unburdened by past confines. While I deeply respect my roots and accomplishments in country music, I am now ready to explore new horizons.”

In “The Tree,” Morris lyrically delves into the issue with the lines, “The rot at the roots is the root of the problem/ But you want to blame it on me.” The sentiment continues in “Get the Hell Out of Here” with, “I hung around longer than anyone should/ You’ve broken my heart more than anyone could.”

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Morris elaborated on her decision, highlighting the escalating sociopolitical divisions within the country music community and the conservative viewpoints held by certain artists and fans.

“After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display,” Morris explained. “It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock. I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over, but it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Morris, recognized for her advocacy of diversity, inclusion, and progress within the country music genre, has been a prominent supporter of amplifying the voices and music of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and artists of color. She has actively championed gender-affirming care and has performed at events dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

As she embarks on her departure from the genre, Morris contemplates the consumption of specific country songs, such as Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town,” reaching the top of the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. She expressed her apprehension about songs being streamed for political purposes rather than for genuine appreciation of the music.

“I think it’s a last bastion,” Morris remarked. “People are streaming these songs out of spite. It’s not out of true joy or love of the music. It’s to own the libs. And that’s not what music is intended for. Music is supposed to be the voice of the oppressed — the actual oppressed. And now it’s being used as this really toxic weapon in culture wars.”

Maren Morris

Morris initially saw herself as an artist addressing contemporary issues through her music. However, as she became more deeply immersed in the country music industry, she grew increasingly aware of the challenges it posed. She underscored the importance of critique when issues arise, even within popular genres, as a means to foster progress.

“If you genuinely cherish this type of music and you observe issues emerging, they deserve scrutiny,” Morris concluded. “Any cultural phenomenon of this magnitude should face scrutiny if we wish to see it evolve. I may have said all that I can say on the matter. I once thought I’d need to make a dramatic exit, but I’m now maturing and recognizing that I can simply step away from elements that no longer bring me fulfillment.”
