Daryl Hall recently initiated legal action by filing a restraining order against John Oates, his former music partner from the well-known pop-rock duo Hall & Oates, renowned for their joint musical journey spanning 18 studio albums released between 1972 and 2006.

The request for this temporary restraining order was officially made by Hall in a Nashville Chancery Court on November 16. Both Oates, along with the co-defendants, namely his wife Aimee J. Oates, and business manager Richard Flynn, who serve as co-trustees of his trust, were served with the order on November 20.

The details surrounding the restraining order have not been disclosed, as the case has been classified under a Contract/Debt category on the Nashville Chancery Court’s website. Efforts by CBS News to gather more information by contacting Hall’s attorney and Flynn for clarification are currently pending, awaiting a response.

Despite their successful collaboration on hit tracks like “Rich Girl” and “You Make My Dreams Come True,” earning them five Grammy nominations, it appears that the relationship between the duo has undergone a distancing over time. In a past interview on “Club Random with Bill Maher,” Hall indicated the longstanding separation between them, pointing out that although they functioned as business partners in creating music under the name Hall & Oates, their creative approaches were distinct and separate.

During the same interview, Hall underscored his substantial contributions to their joint work, highlighting instances such as the 1980 song “Kiss on My List,” where he was credited as the sole songwriter.

The duo’s history traces back to their initial encounter as freshmen at Temple University. Recounting this meeting during a 2013 interview with Dan Rather, Hall narrated how a chance encounter following an altercation at a gig led to their enduring friendship and eventual musical partnership.

In a 2017 interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” before an upcoming tour, Hall expressed his surprise at the enduring nature of their collaboration, while Oates emphasized the sheer joy of their profession, emphasizing how their distinct individualities complemented each other when working in tandem.

Reflecting on their shared body of work, Oates reiterated their perception of themselves as two distinct individuals closely collaborating—a viewpoint that they continue to maintain to this day.
