In a surprising turn of events during the early hours of Black Friday, the vibrant American Dream Mall in northern New Jersey became the epicenter of commotion, necessitating an evacuation due to a bomb threat. Governor Phil Murphy swiftly took to X (formerly Twitter), urging the public to leave the premises “out of an abundance of caution,” as the New Jersey State Police initiated a thorough investigation.
Nestled in East Rutherford alongside MetLife Stadium, American Dream Mall stands as an expansive retail and entertainment hub, featuring indoor amusement parks, an array of restaurants, and over 100 stores, including prestigious luxury brands.
A rapid dissemination of a public safety alert from the New Jersey State Police prompted a swift evacuation, encompassing all mall occupants, including the dedicated staff. An hour later, a collective sigh of relief echoed through the complex as the police delivered an all-clear signal, affirming the successful resolution of the situation and the secure status of the facility.
The NJSP issued a comprehensive statement detailing the morning’s events: “At approximately 7:13 am, an individual conveyed information about a bomb inside American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, Bergen County. As a safety measure, the mall underwent evacuation. The New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit and K-9 unit conducted sweeps for explosive devices, and none were found. The mall is now deemed safe, and American Dream will resume normal operations. This remains an active investigation with no additional information available at this time.”
Notably, among those ushered out of the complex were football enthusiasts gearing up for the Jets-Dolphins game at the adjacent MetLife Stadium. Governor Murphy, in a subsequent X post, announced the mall’s reopening, emphasizing that law enforcement had determined there was “no imminent threat.” However, he underscored an ongoing commitment to vigilance, ensuring a secure holiday season for everyone.
Post-evacuation and subsequent reopening, the mall issued a reassuring statement: “American Dream was evacuated this morning following what was later deemed a non-credible threat. This precaution was taken to prioritize the safety of our employees and guests. The center has swiftly reopened, and we look forward to a joyous and secure holiday season.”
